How to buy a book

Judge it by its cover. And get pretty ones or the quality will just got to pot.

Go used. The life span of the little guy is so short it’s almost non-existent in the chains.

Start at one end of the alphabet. Look through the shelves in order. Pick up anything that looks interesting (you don’t have to buy it, just look at it).

Next time, start at the other end of the alphabet. Don’t be dissing N-Z.

Pick some random thing to collect. My current favorites are

  • mystery novels from all of the Scandinavian countries (Darn you, Finland, why can’t you have chattier inhabitants?)
  • books that are all yellow. Unless they are chic lit. I hate that garbage.
  • books about people who are carrying things around islands or circular road systems. (Bonus: Autonauts of the Cosmoroute by Julio Cortazar. It is yellow AND about going around something (Paris) with things.)

but don’t force it.

Pick the little guys. One hit wonders are just as good, if not better, than a best seller recommended by some major media nutter.

Almost forgot – go to a bookstore!
